How to Play

Story Seed is here to teach you the basic ingredients of a story concept (as Aki sees them) while giving you randomized, fun ideas to play with.

Your goalFind an idea you like and can develop on your own. Story Seed is meant to give you a strong first step (a Premise) you can build on, not a finished story you have to follow.
01

Learn the ingredients

Tap or click the ⓘ information icon on a category to learn what that ingredient does and how it works with the others. Theme is an aspect of life, such as Hope; its perspectives are the different ways characters believe people should live with that aspect. Let those views clash through choices and consequences. You can discover or revise Theme while writing, rather than deciding it all upfront.

02

Spin for ideas

Choose Spin All Unlocked to randomize every category that isn't locked. Let chance offer you a combination you might not have thought of yourself.

03

Keep or change

Click the lock icon to keep an ingredient you like. Use Spin This to change one category, or click Unlock All before spinning again when you want to rethink your choices.

04

Build your premise

When your ingredients are in place, Story Premise turns them into a written-out, logline-adjacent story concept. It updates as you change ingredients. Copy it, keep experimenting, and make it yours.

A note from Aki

This is a tool I wish I'd had 15 years ago, when I started my writing journey. The framework behind it is the one I use to develop my BEACONS graphic novel, as well as all my stories. I hope Story Seed helps you understand some of the basics of writing—and use those basics to build your own framework and story premises.

Story Premise

Your premise updates as your ingredients change. Keep what works; change what does not.

Treat this as a prompt, not a rulebook. Change any ingredient that does not help.
